Healthy Club
About Our Healthy Club Activities
The development of our healthy club plan in 2019 was a continuation of the 2013 club strategy. A key driver for setting up Healthy Club activities was to promote positive health and well being activities among existing club members, offer non-playing members an opportunity to participate more and offer the local community more sporting options. All activities are open to everyone in the community and below is an example of some of the projects and regular healthy club activities.
- Prior to establishing a healthy club formal project, we set up a walking group for all members of the community in 2016 and set a challenge of climbing Lugnaquilla in Wicklow. We regularly take part in RTE’s Operation Transformation and in 2020 we teamed up with another local club called Saint James Gael’s where we took part in weekly walks. - We set up social hurling group in 2018 for retired hurlers, parents who want to learn about the game and newcomers to the area who just want to puc about. As mentioned above we worked with another local club called Saint James Gael’s. Click here for a promotional video we made in 2019 for social hurling.
- Social rounders was established in 2019 and has proven very popular. It’s a fun non-contact sport and we meet weekly (usually on a Friday). All ages and abilities are welcome and you don’t need to worry about being a newcomer as we are still learning the game ourselves. Click here for a quick video on the social rounders initiative.
- We organize regular talks on mental health and nutrition. We teamed up with Jigsaw to deliver two online sessions on being a good adult and being a good mentor in late 2020 / early 2021.
- We set up an adult choir in February 2021. The group currently meets weekly via zoom, but plan to meet in person when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. All are welcome and the group is not restricted to existing members. You can follow our choir activities using the #KevinsChoir hashtag.
- We organised a club challenge called #TheBarnToTheBigApple to motivate our younger members and their parents active during lockdown. We challenged our club members to walk, run or cycle 10,000 KM’s. The members responded and achieved over 29,000 KM’s.
