Kevins Winter Handball Challenge

We have no walls, no playing experience, but lots of enthusiasm for handball after re-establishing the sport in the club for the first time since the late 1930s.

We have been playing regularly since September 2023 and held our first internal club tournament – The 40×20 Winter Challenge – tonight in Croke Park as we have no courts of our own. The boys had a great evening playing in the clubs first ever tournament, starting with a round robin blitz to select players to represent the club for Dublin competitions and then split the groups into Cup and Plate knock out competitions. The standard was really high throughout the evening with lots of rallies and close games.

The tournament also gave our boys an opportunity to play competition rules in preparation for the Dublin tournaments in December and Cumann nA mBunscoil in January.

Well done to Alfie McCarron who took home the cup after coming from behind to scrape past Fred Macklin 21-19 in the semi-final and then beating Matthew McGlade 21-18 in the final in another tough battle. After a strong performance in the round robin event Seán Nix’s day came to an end when Matthew Glade beat him in the semi-final. again this was a close contest ending 21-19. Aodhán Ó hAoláin narrowly beat Séadna Clancy in the Plate final which was another cracking game ending 21-19

The club also selected their representatives for the upcoming Dublin competitions.

  • Under 10 – Tristan Tennyson and Cody Kenny
  • Under 11 – Fred Macklin and Matthew McGlade
  • Under 12 – Alfie Mc Carron and Sean Nix

We will be playing handball over the Winter. If you’re interested in getting involved then get in touch. You can email pro.kevins.dublin@gaa.ie for more information.
