All eyes were on the weather warnings last night as Orange and Yellow weather alerts were predicted and our band of supporters wondered would the game be played! But played it was and the Kevin’s girls turned it into a Blue Alert as the Warrior Woman from Wicklow lead the Blue Army to the Holy Grail!
Kevin’s got off to a great start as our All-Star nominee Serena Costello knocked in a goal after some confusion on the end line. Kevin’s took the early lead, but the ladies from Rush came back with 2 goals from long range shots edging them ahead at half time 2-4 to 2-2.
Kevin’s came out of the blocks with another good start in the 2nd half with half forwards Niamh Roe Ashe and Eliza Siegel shining through. But it was the youthful Serena Costello on the edge of box swinging on high balls putting the St Maurs defence under pressure. A fine save from their keeper with Serena’s first overhead didn’t stop her as she found the net 5 minutes later. Ironically she spent the last 2 years telling the camogie girls not to swing on high balls when playing with the bat and ball.
Despite Kevin’s dominance St Maurs once again scored a goal against the run of play. The side line were sweating but the Wiley Emmet Corrigan sent the message in to unleash the Warrior Woman from Wicklow. Up stepped Claire Graham who started to eat away at the Rush lead from centre back with frees and a masterclass display of camogie. Inspired by their mentor the girls and side line responded and when the final whistle eventually blew Kevin’s were 3-8 to 3-5 winners with scores also coming from the half forward line including Niamh Roe-Ashe, Lucy Ryder and Eliza Siegal.
Todays successful squad included Amanda Walton, Mary Reynolds, Mary Kinane, Hannah Cummins-Weiss, Emily Nolan, Claire Graham, Ellen Kenehan, Muireann O Mahony, Eimear O Doherty, Lucy Ryder, Niamh Roe-Ashe, Eliza Siegel, Louise Lightfoot, Serena Costello, Caoimhe Carey, Grace Hassan Maguire, Elena Murphy, Eimear Mc Kenzie, Emer Larkin, Matilda Murray, Ella Williams, Moya Dowling, Molly Waddell, Erica Jones, Jane Hanna, Phyllis Seale-Foynes, Shannon Redmond.
In an emotional outburst Emmet Corrigan announced that he can finally stop posting pictures of himself and the Sam Maguire on his social media as he now has an adult camogie championship cup to display 😁
Well done to all the players, mentors and supporters who not only made the trip out to Clonshaugh today, but also for their dedication over the years to bring through this group from underage to adult.
The girls were last seen in – one of our Chaser sponsors – The Circular enjoying a well earned celebratory meal.
Many thanks to Glenda O’Leary and Faye McKenzie for the photos.
Todays final wraps up our adult championship season where we fielded 8 championship teams in total across three codes, as well as our social squads. Our adult hurlers all made it to the quarter finals of their championships, the adult mixed rounders the semi-finals and our camogs made 2 finals winning 1. We look forward to 2025 when we go a bit further!
In other news our Minor hurlers progressed to the semi-final stages of the B championship by beating Cuala this morning in Dolphin Park. Quick goals in both the 1st and 2nd half set the boys up for their win! There is huge crossover with the minor hurlers and Junior camogie squad who won today as Claire Graham coached many of the boys in the Kevins nursery back in 2011 and our two goal hero Serena Costello is also related to one of the hurlers … her son Ciaran who was part of the nursery set-up. Another one for the history books if we ever get around to publishing it!!!
They await to hear who the opposition will be in 2 weeks time, but it will be either Fingallians, Naomh Barrog or St Peregrines / Westmanstown Gaels. Many thanks to Conor Byrne for keeping us up to date on the twitter machine earlier today!
