Club activities are beginning to ramp up as we head into the month of March and the great news is that our Under 12 and 15 hurlers are marching up their qualifier and Feile league tables! We have been welcoming new faces at our Kevin’s Heroes and are seeing a steady increase in numbers at our weekly Donore Credit Union ABC Nursery.
Our week-end commenced on Friday night with some Healthy Handball. Our underage handball is aimed at 10-11 year olds. Feedback has been very positive to date. Our adult sessions have been facilitated by the Brian Boru club and numbers have been increasing weekly with a combination of mentors, parents and rounders players giving it a go. We are delighted to be able to partner with the TK2 Community Centre in Charlemont Street and the Brian Boru club to make this event happen and bring handball back to the inner city where it once thrived. As we don’t have a permanent ball wall for hurling/ camogie and/or handball we are reliant on the goodwill of other organisations to get handball going more frequently. This Friday is the last week of the current trial, so if you are interested in handball pop down and take a look and if you know of a suitable facility in the area get in touch.
One lucky Club Lotto winner had a good Saturday morning, as we presented Audrey Wade with her winnings! Meanwhile, our Go Games hurlers were very busy on the hurling fields. With most teams were travelling , it was left to the Under 11s to hold the fort as they welcomed O’Dwyers of Balbriggan to Dolphin Park. It was a tough physical battle for our Under 11 hurlers who were backed up by by some of our camogs. Our Under 8s, 9s and 10s were on the road playing Kilmacud Crokes, Ballyboden Saint Endas and St Olaf’s. Our under 12s were also on the road and had a great win over Saint Brigids, making it 2 from 2 in their qualifier group! You can read all about this game here.
In the afternoon the club reached another key milestone as our very own Meadhbh Hicks togged out with the Dublin Senior Camogie squad. The camogie section is 30 years old this year and we are delighted to see such a great role model step up from the Dublin Intermediates. While the result didn’t go our way, our travelling group were very proud see Kevin’s first woman to tog our at senior county level. Meadhbh is a local girl who has come up via the nursery and when she is not trying to improve her own game she is busy coaching younger players who will no doubt play alongside her at club level in years to come. Meadhbh was not the only girl wearing sky blue this week-end. Well done also to Chloe Kearns who togged out with the Dublin Under 15 Development squad and had a good win over Limerick.
On Sunday morning our Under 15 Feile squad took to the field for a 2nd time. They drew with Kilmacud Crokes in their opening game at home and were up against St Jude’s who had a big win against Cuala in round 1. However the Kevin’s boyz stood firm and put in another hard shift with Daniel Obeimhen and Rory Winslow providing the engine room for a strong first half performance setting us up well as we led 4-2 to 0-4 at half time. Kevin’s emptied their bench with all subs making a positive impact. Rian O’Donnell excelled at wing-forward while Fionn Roche provided a good display at centre back. Final score Kevin’s 4-7, St Jude’s 3-5. Next up are Cuala and you can check out the group tables here.
Our minor hurlers were also in action on Sunday morning and while results didn’t go our way we did reach another milestone fielding 2 minor squads for the 1st time in approximately 13 years. Another positive indicator that the club is growing! We should also take this opportunity to say congratulations to Declan Power who won a Leinster Schools title with Terenure recently.
In Leinster League news our Intermediate camogs lost out to Setanta by 4 points and our Junior A hurlers opened their Leinster League campaign with a good win over Carlow side Burren Rangers. Final score Kevins 3-19, Burren Rangers 1-13.
